Rena Sydel is a proud member of the violin section in the Sunrise Pops. She is a retired elementary music teacher with 36 years of experience in the field; twenty-nine of those at Tamarac Elementary School, which she calls her 2nd home. She has her Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Queens College, City University of New York.
During her career, she has earned several honors. Ms. Sydel is proud to have been awarded Associate Master Teacher, National Board Certification, and Teacher of the Year.
Currently, Ms. Sydel is enjoying retirement, playing violin in the Broward Symphony, Hallandale Symphonic Pops, Sugar Pops, Century Village East, and of course the Sunrise Pops Orchestras. She is also a proud member of the Allegro Vivo String Quintet, and the Personnel Director and concert commentator of the Broward Symphonic Band. She loves playing music with her family, Stephanie Colman and Jonathan Sydel, both in the percussion section, and is busier now in retirement, but loving every minute of it!
Janice P. Gillies
Janice P. Gillies has been performing on oboe and English horn in Miami Dade and Broward counties for the past 14 years. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Music Therapy degree from Michigan State University while studying oboe with Dr. Daniel Stolper. Her present positions are as principle oboist with the Sunrise Pops, the Broward Symphony Orchestra and the New River Summer Serenade Orchestra and as 2nd oboe/English horn with the Century Village East Symphony. Her most recent playing opportunity involved performing three seasons with the Symphony of the Americas. Ms. Gillies also performs as a freelance musician for area opera companies, chamber groups and university orchestras.
Ms. Gillies has maintained a music therapy practice for over 25 years, providing music therapy sessions for adult day care centers, specializing in the care of individuals with memory disorders.
Kathleen Crotty joined the Sunrise Pops in 1993. She had attended concerts with the Boston Pops orchestra where her uncle played trumpet under the legendary Arthur Fiedler and soon after, she began her study of the clarinet. Further studies include receiving a Bachelor of Music Education degree and Certificate in Performance from Florida State University and a Master of Music Performance degree from the Hartt College of Music at the University of Hartford.
After completing her education, she became the Band Director at Plantation Middle School, where she taught for 31 years before retiring recently.
Kathleen performs also with the Broward Symphony Orchestra, the Sugar Pops Orchestra, the New River Orchestra and several area woodwind quintets. She is looking forward to many more years performing with the Sunrise Pops.
Stephanie Colman is currently a professional pianist and percussionist. Ms. Colman earned her Masters Degree in Musicology from Queens College of the City University of New York. She used her musical talents to pursue a career in music education, and is now retired from 40 dedicated years teaching music on all levels from Kindergarten to University, in both the public and private arenas. During her career in education, Ms. Colman was named Teacher of the Year twice, and achieved her National Board Certification, an honor of which she is very proud. Ms. Colman has won numerous awards and accolades as a pianist, accompanist, conductor, adjudicator.
In addition to Ms. Colman’s career in education, she is also proficient on piano, percussion, wind and string instruments. She is currently performing with the Hallandale Symphonic Pops Orchestra, and the Sugar Pops Orchestra; and is the principal percussionist in the Broward Symphony Orchestra, the South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble, and of course, the Sunrise Pops. Ms. Colman is also a civilian bugler for the military, volunteering her time and musical services at military ceremonies and funerals.
She is also a proud member of American Mensa Ltd., a partner and mom of two professional musicians, and spends her leisure time as an avid baseball fan, and gardening.
